Young Leaders are volunteers aged 13½ to 18 who help support Squirrel, Beaver, Cub and Scout sections while developing leadership skills, confidence and experience.
Young Leaders assist with planning and running weekly meetings, activities, games, camps and events. It’s a great opportunity to build skills, support younger members and make a positive difference within the local community.
Young Leaders are usually Explorer Scouts taking part in the Young Leaders’ Scheme, although young people from outside Scouting may also volunteer as part of recognised award programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award or Queen’s Guide Award.
Young Leaders work alongside adult volunteers to help deliver exciting and engaging programmes for younger sections.
Typical Young Leader activities include:
Being a Young Leader is rewarding, enjoyable and a fantastic way to gain valuable life experience while having fun.
Young Leaders develop important transferable skills including leadership, teamwork, communication, planning and problem solving. These experiences can help with school, college, university applications, CVs and future employment.
Young Leaders working through the Explorer Scout Young Leaders’ Scheme can also achieve recognised badges, certificates and awards during their time volunteering.
All Young Leaders complete training that introduces them to Scouting, leadership, safeguarding and safety. Further optional modules help develop additional leadership and practical skills.
Young Leaders are always supported by experienced adult volunteers who help guide and mentor them throughout their volunteering journey.
If you would like to volunteer as a Young Leader, we would love to hear from you.
