The Legend of Saint Giles

Saint Giles was born in Greece and was said to be of royal blood. He was known for his kindness, compassion and care for others, especially animals and those in need.

According to legend, Saint Giles chose to live a quiet life away from the crowds, eventually settling as a hermit in a forest. There he lived peacefully among the birds, animals and trees.

His closest companion was a gentle white doe, which lived near him and trusted him completely.

One day, during a royal hunt, the white doe was chased through the forest by hunters and their dogs. The frightened animal fled to Saint Giles for protection.

As Saint Giles shielded the doe, an arrow fired by one of the hunters struck him in the hand.

The hunters were deeply moved when they discovered that Saint Giles had been injured while protecting the animal. The story became a symbol of kindness, protection and selfless service.

This is why our Group badge features the wounded hand and arrow. It reflects the story of Saint Giles and the values of care, courage, service and helping others — values which continue to sit at the heart of Scouting today.
