Support for new volunteers

You will never be expected to do everything on your own. New volunteers are supported by experienced leaders within their section, the wider Group leadership team and local District and County volunteers.

Volunteering is flexible. Some volunteers help every week, while others support occasionally at meetings, camps, events, fundraising activities or behind the scenes.

Systems we use

Online Scout Manager (OSM)

OSM is used locally to manage programmes, badges, events, attendance, payments and parent communications.

Scouts Membership System

The Scouts Membership System is used for volunteer onboarding, DBS checks, references, learning records and adult appointments.

Your first steps as a volunteer

  1. Be added to the Scouts Membership System
  2. Complete your personal details
  3. Sign the declaration

Learning and training

All volunteers complete required learning through My Learning. This is known as Growing Roots learning.

For most Section Team volunteers, this includes:

  • Safeguarding and Safety, completed within the first 30 days
  • Creating Inclusion, Data Protection in Scouts and Who We Are And What We Do, completed within the first 180 days
  • Delivering a Great Programme, where required for section roles
  • First Response first aid, completed within the first 12 months and renewed every three years

Your role in My Membership will show which learning applies to you.

First Response and Bucks training courses

First Response first aid is required for Section Team volunteers and other volunteers who regularly work directly with young people. This training must be renewed every three years.

Bucks Scouts provides local training courses, including First Response sessions and other volunteer learning opportunities.

First Response training options

There are usually two ways to complete First Response first aid training:

  • Full-day course: Complete all First Response learning and practical training in a single day.
  • Blended course: Complete the online First Response e-learning module first, followed by a half-day practical session.

For the blended option, the online e-learning module must normally be completed at least one week before attending the practical session.

All volunteers should be familiar with the Safe Scouting cards, including the Yellow Card, Purple Card, Orange Card and Green Card.

  • Yellow Card: Safeguarding Code of Conduct for Adults
  • Purple Card: Safety and incident reporting guidance
  • Orange Card: Safeguarding guidance for Young Leaders
  • Green Card: Alcohol and Scouts guidance
